Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need To Know

Clinical FAQs

  • No. Provided you keep still, the procedure will be painless. There are no injections or incisions required.

Some patients describe cold air and pulling sensations, along with a noise from the suction machine that resembles the sound of tuning an old radio. However, minimal discomfort is experienced.

Microsuction is considered the safest, most effective, and comfortable method of earwax removal.

  • -If you are under 18, ensure you have a legal parent or guardian in attendance for the duration of the appointment.

-Please ensure you have made 1 hour available around your appointment, regardless of the procedure necessary. While all appointments should take less than an hour, this helps to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, free from external commitments.

    Olive Oil

-If you are aware of a wax blockage and have booked a removal procedure, it is highly beneficial to instil olive oil or Earol spray into the ear canal, before bedtime, in the days prior to your appointment.

    3 drops, 3 times a day, for 3 days.

The properties of olive oil soften the earwax and make extraction quicker, easier, and more comfortable - avoiding the need for a potential secondary appointment.

Note: DO NOT use olive oil if you are aware of or suspect an eardrum perforation (tear or hole in the eardrum)

Please do not hesitate to CALL ahead of your appointment with any questions or queries you may have. Alternatively, please use the form below.

  • We can safely perform a consultation, inspection, and microsuction procedure on any individual aged 6+ who can remain still for the duration of the procedure.

A legal parent or guardian must be in attendance for the duration of the procedure for any patient below the age of 18.

NOTE: Patient safety takes priority every time. The procedure may be halted or refused to ensure the patient's safety if they are unable to remain still.

  • With every ear being unique, many variables can affect the length of the appointment. Your booking will be for a 30-minute duration.

When making plans around your appointment, please allow an hour for your procedure to take place to be on the safe side, regardless of the appointment type.

  • Advice will be given on how to prepare for the next appointment. Usually, this involves applying additional oil to the ear to soften the wax.

A return visit will be organised at your home or the clinic, free of charge.

Note: Using olive oil or Earol before your first appointment will significantly reduce the need for a secondary appointment.

  • If impacted earwax is identified and the appropriate removal procedure is performed, the patient should, in most cases, experience near-instant relief of symptoms.

In the rare case that relief is not fully achieved, consider booking an appointment with your GP or audiologist for further clinical advice.

Your visit to a hearing specialist or GP will be more effective and accurate if you have any wax removed beforehand.

Training FAQs

  • No! Unlike many courses, we accept delegates from all backgrounds.

Earwax removal services are an unregulated, non-statutory practice area in the UK and do not require a formal degree or qualification.

    No previous experience is needed.

However, it would prove very difficult and unsafe to attempt to provide these services without quality, certified training such as our course.

  • Purchasing the course and completing its content does not necessarily guarantee our certification.

We will deem you safe to practice based on the assessment and supervision period at the end of the course.

If we do not deem you safe, we will first advise you to go back and revise the course content.

If you need to return to attend the course again, one return booked within a month of first attendance is charged at just £250 incl VAT.

Our course has been extensively tested with a wide range of test delegates. We are certain that if the content is followed fully and in the proper order, anyone can safely practice.

We also offer ongoing training packages to support you in your development, should you wish.

  • Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a CPD Certificate of Completion demonstrating that you have met the learning and competency outcomes.

Earwax removal is an unregulated practice; you therefore cannot be ‘formally qualified’ like a degree, but can be endorsed and certified by other practitioners.

We are a registered CPD Provider, and your certification serves as proof of the CPD hours awarded during your time on our course.

You will also have permission to use our brand name and certification image for endorsement purposes.

  • YOU WILL NOT NEED EQUIPMENT TO ATTEND FACE-TO-FACE TRAINING WITH US. All training equipment is provided for use on the day. Simply bring yourself an open mind!

You will also be given exclusive access to discounts on customisable start-up packages from The Hearing Lab, capable of saving you hundreds of pounds. You will receive the discount method at the end of the course.

We recommend allocating a budget of around £1500-£5000 for equipment, depending on the budget.

The bulk of this cost will come from the eye loupes; however, we urge you to invest in them where possible, as they offer a clear view into the patient’s ear and must be of good quality for effective depth perception.

We personally use the Vorotek O-Scope, which is one of the best for aural microsuction (and our personal recommendation); however, we do appreciate the expense of this at £1620 incl VAT.

If you have any questions on specific equipment, The Hearing Lab team would be happy to assist.

  • As an industry, there is no specific regulatory body for earwax removal; however, Tom, your principal trainer, is a qualified education and training instructor.

Additionally, one of the largest governing bodies for learning and development training material, CPD, has certified our course, evidencing its value and substantial educational content.

We’d urge you to consider that with no previous experience, we have conceived and grown a successful earwax removal business that has replaced our full-time employment.

We know this industry and how to make it work for us. Now, we want to make it work for you.

  • FOR CERTIFICATION OF COMPETENCY, YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO EQUIPMENT TO COMPLETE THE ASSESSMENT MODULES.

A welcome box with training materials will be sent to you within 48 hours of signing up for the course. These are training materials and not earwax removal equipment.

We provide an equipment checklist with examples using the kit that we personally use each day.
