Everything You Need To Know

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. Provided you keep still, the procedure will be painless. There are no injections or incisions required.

Some patients describe cold air and pulling sensations as well as some noise from the suction machine. However, minimal discomfort is experienced.

Microsuction is considered the safest and most effective and comfortable method of earwax removal.

  • -If you are under 18, ensure you have a legal parent or guardian in attendance for the duration of the appointment.

-Please ensure you have made 1 hour available around your appointment regardless of the procedure necessary. While all appointments should take less than an hour, this helps to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, free from external commitments.

    Olive Oil

-If you are aware of a wax blockage and have booked a removal procedure, it is highly beneficial to instill of olive oil or Earol spray into the ear canal, before bedtime, in the days prior to your appointment.

    3 drops, 3 times a day, for 3 days.

The properties of olive oil soften the earwax and make extraction quicker, easier, and more comfortable - avoiding the need for a potential secondary appointment.

Note: DO NOT use olive oil if you are aware of or suspect an eardrum perforation (tear or hole in the eardrum)

Please do not hesitate to CALL ahead of your appointment with any questions or queries you may have. Alternatively, please use the form below.

  • I am able to perform a consultation, inspection, and microsuction procedure safely on any individual age 11+ provided they are able to remain still for the duration of the procedure.

A legal parent or guardian must be in attendance for the duration of the procedure for any patient below the age of 18.

NOTE: Patient safety takes priority every time. The procedure may be halted or refused to keep the patient safe if they are unable to remain still.

  • With every ear being unique, many variables can affect the length of the appointment. Your booking will be for a 45-minute duration.

When making plans around your appointment, please allow an hour for your procedure to take place to be on the safe side, regardless of the appointment type.

  • Ear Irrigation is the practice of directing a pressurized water stream precisely into the ear canal with the intent of ‘flushing’ earwax out.

While this can sometimes be necessary, it does not produce the consistently effective and comfortable results that microsuction is able to give.

Additionally, the precision offered by microsuction lends itself better to the variables present between ears. In some cases, earwax is heavily solidified, an obstacle that irrigation is also less effective against.

Most crucially, irrigation is more uncomfortable and less safe than microsuction due to the lesser control over water and the inability to monitor the ear canal while the procedure is taking place.

Aftercare guidelines are more stringent as irrigation carries a small risk of post-procedure infection.

For these reasons, I largely prioritize the microsuction procedure with irrigation as a secondary option or at patient request.
